Burmese military official fabricated story on
a recent incident to foreign diplomats and blames KIO, according to a press conference in Lashio (20 January, 2006)
“The place where the Burmese military battalion met with the KIO men is not included in the agreed designated places.
The KIO officers accepted it was their group’s fault to be at an area outside the designated places.
The KIO accepted its members’ fault.”
Kachin Community, USA: Press Release Statement
"Kachins residing in the US urge our KIA/KIO leaders and other ceased-fire groups to withdraw from National Convention

discussed and a decision should be made reflecting responsible leadership."
Full Statement
The Human Rights Watch World Report 2006 "Failed Reconciliation Efforts with and Continued Violence against
Ethnic Groups While seventeen ceasefire agreements have brought an end to the fighting in some areas of Burma, they
have not resulted in political settlements or significant improvements in the daily lives of villagers. In 2005 there
was an increase in government military presence in certain ceasefire areas, and the political concerns of ethnic
communities appear to have been left unaddressed in the deliberations of the National Convention."

Despite the bloodshed in KIA on
2nd January 2006, some Kachin leaders and hand-picked people in Myitkyina were forced to go the supporting rally of a sham
National Convention at 7th January 2006. MRTV-3 claims that the public supports this event voluntarily, in fact SPDC
Northern Commander issued an order that those hand-picked people must attend in mass rally.
"At one recent rally in Kachin State, many onlookers were disappointed to see members of
the Kachin Independence Organization ceasefire group reading from a government-prepared speech. Gauri Zau Seng, vice
chairman of the KIO, today confirmed that the speech had been “prepared by them [the junta].(The Irrawaddy News)”
Some KIO/KIA pro-military regime leaders attended the ceremony without approval from KIO Central Committee.
